以前は「成人病」と呼ばれ、その対策は病気の早期発見や早期治療などの二次予防を重視していた。それに加えて食習慣や運動習慣など、生活習慣の改善を中心にした一次予防(健康増進・発病予防)を重視した対策を推進するために新たに導入された概念のこと。糖尿病(diabetes mellitus, DM)、高血圧(hypertension, high blood pressure)、がん(cancer)、脳卒中(stroke)、心臓病(heart disease)など多くの疾病の発症や進行には生活習慣が深く関係しているため、現在予防が重視されている。

These used to be called adult diseases, and the way of dealing with them was mainly secondary prevention, such as finding them early and starting to treat them early. In addition to that, new concepts of lifestyle-related diseases were introducted to promote primary prevention strategies that center on improving life habits such as diet and exercises have started to be promoted. Nowadays, prevention is emphasized because of the strong relationship between lifestyle and the onset or progression of diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (high blood pressure), cancer, strokes, and heart disease, etc.
