特別養護老人ホーム（Intensive Care Home for the Elderly）とも呼ばれている（老人福祉法）。原則、要介護度3以上で、在宅での生活が難しい要介護者が入所して、主に生活上の介助を受ける。
This is also known as an Intensive Care Home for the Elderly (Act on Social Welfare for the Elderly). In principle, people belonging to Long-term Care Level 3 and above, who have difficulty living at home, are admitted and mainly receive support for daily life.
